Hampshire Cricket's historian Dave Allen takes a look back on timely memorable moments in his ‘On This Day’ series.
Hampshire v Glamorgan, County Championship: 11th May – 14th May 2014
Hampshire closed this, the third day of their County Championship match with Glamorgan at the The Ageas Bowl in 2014, on the verge of an important victory in Division Two.
On the first day they bowled out the visitors for 224 with three wickets each for Abbott, Ervine and Coles and some late resistance from Glamorgan’s ‘keeper Mark Wallace.
In reply they were 119-1 and on day two, Carberry, Dawson and Vince all passed 60 as Hampshire took a lead of 121.
Glamorgan were quickly 9-3 and while Bragg and Allenby effected a revival of sorts, 158-4 then became 185-9 at the close of this third day with James Tomlinson and Kyle Abbott sharing five wickets between them.
The next day should have been a formality with Hampshire needing just 67 to win, although there must have been some anxiety as they slipped to 27-3, before James Vince (29*) saw them home.
The return was at Cardiff in September – the day that Hampshire clinched promotion and the title and Hampshire have been in Division One ever since.
