Tremlett Holds Nerve - Surrey v Hampshire, Benson & Hedges Cup (South Group) - 1st May 2002

Hampshire met Surrey in a Benson & Hedges South Division match at the Oval on 1st May 2002, and having lost their previous game (v Kent) they needed a victory.

Surrey won the toss and Hampshire batted, opening with a fifty partnership between James Hamblin (21) and Neil Johnson (46). Derek Kenway added 40 and captain Robin Smith 64, but there were also four ‘ducks’ while the wickets were shared by all Surrey’s bowlers except Ed Giddins (0-51) who would join Hampshire briefly in 2003.

Hampshire were all out from the final ball and Surrey needed 244 from 50 overs.

They started badly losing Mark Butcher to Mullally for just one run, but Alec Stewart (52) & Mark Ramprakash (39) took them to 76, after which wickets fell fairly steadily.

Surrey needed 87 from the last 10 overs and had a good chance until Azhar Mahmood was run out after hitting 50 from 40 balls.

Chris Tremlett bowled the final over, and Alex Tudor needed three from the last ball but managed only one and Hampshire had won by one run.
