Hampshire met Middlesex at the Rose Bowl in the County Championship in a match starting on 6th May 2005. It was, until mid-way through day four, a tight match.
Hampshire batted first and posted a reasonable but not huge score of 275, built on a half-century from Michael Brown and 84 by John Crawley. Kevin Pietersen in his first weeks with Hampshire was watched by an England representative but was dismissed without scoring, while Richardson and Styris took four wickets each.

Middlesex, 9-0 overnight were equally dependent on two men, Owais Shah (83) and Ed Joyce (70) as they took a lead of just four runs – Tremlett, Taylor and Warne, three wickets each.
Hampshire’s top nine all reached double figures in their second innings, Pothas leading the way with 65 while Mascarenhas (44*) was unbeaten as Hampshire set Middlesex 301 to win.
Middlesex began their chase in earnest at the start of day four and reached 125 before the third wicket fell, but only Ed Smith with 52 and later Paul Weekes with 49 could stay for long enough, and in the afternoon 203-6, became 212-9 and 236 all out. Hampshire won by 64 runs, Warne (4-58) and Tremlett (4-59), adding to their three wickets apiece from the first innings.
