Overseas Round-Up: Five Players In T10 League & Albert Hits Ton
During the winter months, many Hampshire players have continued playing cricket around the globe
Following the close of the 2022 English domestic season in September, a number of Hampshire players have opted to venture overseas in order to hone their skills in competitive fixtures during the winter.
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) final takes place on Friday 23 December, having started on Tuesday 6 December.
Hampshire all-rounder James Fuller has been representing Jaffna Kings and, during his six games, has been especially successful with the ball – taking ten wickets at an average of 18.70.
The Kings finished second in the group stage before winning the Qualifier to advance to the final, however, Fuller hasn’t played since their penultimate group match against Galle Gladiators.
Their opponents in the final will be Colombo Stars whose line-up includes Hampshire’s new signing Benny Howell.
Howell has played in eight games during his time with the Stars scoring 76 runs at an impressive strike rate of 190.00, with his best score coming in the group fixture against the Kings when he made 43 off 20 balls before he was dismissed by Fuller.
The all-rounder has also taken five wickets, including figures of 3-17 in the Eliminator against Galle Gladiators.
Meanwhile, the Big Bash League (BBL) began last week with four Hampshire players taking part.
Skipper James Vince has been turning out for Sydney Sixers, playing in all three of their games so far. In the last game, against Hobart Hurricanes, Vince made an unbeaten 19 which helped the Sixers get over the line and record their first win.
The Hurricanes themselves have won just one of their three games so far and have Hampshire Hawks’ overseas duo from the 2022 Vitality Blast Nathan Ellis and Ben McDermott in their ranks. Ellis has one wicket to his name so far, while McDermott has 34 runs in his three innings.
Ross Whiteley is making his first appearance in the tournament, playing for Brisbane Heat. The batter has made a solid start with 46 runs from his opening three matchs. His best of 28* came during the Heat’s opening match against Melbourne Renegades. In his most recent match, Whiteley even took a wicket when he bowled out Colin de Grandhomme of the Adelaide Strikers.
Also in Australia, but not in the BBL, Toby Albert has played in two more games for Joondalup, adding 16 more runs to take his total to 355 during his 15 matches down under.
Fletcha Middleton put on his best performance yet for the Cape Town, scoring a well made 87 in a recent 50-over match. He has now played in 15 matches during his time in South Africa, scoring 310 runs at an average of 31.00.
Keep your eyes peeled for more ‘Overseas Round-Ups’, which will include Hampshire players involved in the rest of the Big Bash League and other T20 franchise leagues.
