Overseas Round-Up: Vince Impresses In BBL

During the winter months, many Hampshire players have continued playing cricket around the globe

The Big Bash League (BBL) has passed the halfway stage now and there have been some key performances from Hampshire players.

Skipper James Vince has played in all ten of Sydney Sixers’ matches so far. Scores of 39 and 41 were followed up by an unbeaten 91 against Melbourne Stars which guided his side to a final over victory. Vince, who will now head to the International League T20 (ILT20) to captain the Gulf Giants, leaves the Sixers top of the table, having made 263 runs at an average of 37.57.

Ross Whiteley, who is with Brisbane Heat, has racked up 74 runs from nine innings. The 34-year-old has also taken three wickets, with a best of 2-2 coming during the Heat’s victory over Vince’s Sixers.

Finally, Hampshire Hawks’ overseas duo from 2022, Ben McDermott and Nathan Ellis, have once again been turning out for Hobart Hurricanes. McDermott, who led the BBL in runs scored last year, made half centuries in consecutive games against the Adelaide Strikers to take his total up to 174 for the tournament. Meanwhile, Ellis has 10 wickets to his name, including an impressive 4-37 against Sydney Thunder.

Elsewhere, Benny Howell made two appearances in the Bangladesh Premier League for Rangpur Riders with an economical 1-16 in the first game helping them to victory. He has also now headed off to play in the ILT20 joining up with Desert Vipers.

The SA20 began earlier this week before Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who are managed by Adi Birrell, played their first game against Pretoria Capitals on Thursday. Both James Fuller and Mason Crane played in the match with the former scoring an explosive 27 runs from just 12 balls as the Sunrisers fell to a 23-run defeat.

Meanwhile, Toby Albert played in his first game of 2023 for Australian club cricket side Joondalup. The 21-year-old made 78 from 60 balls to help them to a convincing victory and taking his total down under up to 433, at an average of 27.06, from 16 games.

Keep your eyes peeled for more ‘Overseas Round-Ups’, which will include Hampshire players involved in the rest of the Big Bash League and other T20 franchise leagues, such as the SA20 and the ILT20.
