Option One: Takes 3 wickets in the final over to win the 2012 FLT20 and complete white ball double

Tasked with defending 14 off the final six balls of the Friends Life T20 Final against Yorkshire at Cardiff, a 22-year-old Chris Wood stepped up to the occasion in terrific fashion.

With his first ball, he had Tim Bresnan caught by Jimmy Adams at cover, but David Miller on 70* came back on strike.

Three singles followed as Wood nailed three back-to-back yorkers, and Yorkshire now required two sixes to win the game off the final two deliveries.

Rich Pyrah tried but could only drag Wood back onto his stumps as victory was all but in the bag for the Hampshire Royals.

With the final ball, Wood sealed the deal as Azeem Rafiq chipped a simple catch to Sean Ervine to restrict Yorkshire to 140-8, as Hampshire won their second T20 title by 10 runs.

Option Two: Takes 3-39 in dramatic final over victory against Warwickshire in 2012 CB40

Earlier in the same year, Wood starred once again in the CB40 final at Lord’s, as Hampshire defeated Warwickshire in dramatic fashion.

Wood struck with the first wicket of Varun Chopra for 26 who spooned a catch to Jimmy Adams diving forward at short cover.

The left-armer then found some bounce and nicked off Tim Ambrose with the help of an excellent catch standing up from Michael Bates.

Then, with the final ball of the second powerplay in the 35th over, Wood angled in on Rikki Clarke’s stumps from around the wicket, knocking over his leg stump, and Warwickshire slipped to 193-5.

Further wickets from David Griffiths and Kabir Ali meant that although the scores were level, Hampshire won on the count of losing fewer wickets, in one of the most dramatic finals in recent years, with Hampshire completing a famous white ball double.

Option Three: Takes 1-43 and a run out in 2018 RLODC victory against Kent at Lord’s

Once again at Lord’s, Wood stood tall to deliver in another victorious final for Hampshire.

Wood took 1-43 in nine overs, with the big wicket of Daniel Bell-Drummond for 86 being his only scalp.

The Kent opener looked to cut but could only bring the ball back onto his stumps, and Kent continued to struggle at 179-4 in the 35th over.

With Sam Billings being the last hope for Kent, he looked to nurdle a couple down to Wood at long on, only for the fast bowler to fire a throw over the top of the stumps to Liam Dawson at the non-striker’s end, running out Harry Podmore for a single, and Hampshire had their ninth wicket.

With three overs to go, victory was all but Hampshire’s, and one ball later, Billings chipped Gareth Berg to Dale Steyn at fine leg, and the Rose and Crown won their first white ball trophy in six years.

Option Four: 20 not out and wicket of Phil Salt in dramatic 2022 Vitality Blast win

Hampshire were struggling to put up a defendable total in the final of the 2022 Vitality Blast.

Ben McDermott was the start with the bat having made 62 off just 36 balls, but good bowling from Luke Wood and Matt Parkinson pegged back the middle order.

Wood came in with the score on 111-7 in the 15th over, but helped propel the Hawks to a challenging 152-8.

He cut away Tom Hartley through backward point for four to bring him his first boundary, before he launched England’s Richard Gleeson over long on and into the crowd for a huge six.

With the ball, it’s fair to say Wood didn’t get off to the best of starts, as Phil Salt pulled the first ball for four, before the left-armer overstepped, and the England opener launched the ball into the crowd on the free hit.

However, with his third legal ball, Wood found the top edge of Salt, and the ball landed in the safe hands of Tom Prest to took a diving catch running in from deep square leg.

The Hawks had their big fish in the first over, and the rest, as they say, is history.
