Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy Rewind: Elwiss Offers Resistance Against Tough Diamonds

Georgia Elwiss top scored with 61 as the Vipers made the trip up to Headingley to take on Northern Diamonds in the last group game of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy

With the 2022 season now firmly in the rear-view mirror, we're taking a look back at some of the performances that caught the eye throughout Southern Vipers' Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy campaign.

Looking to continue their unbeaten run for the season, the Vipers headed north to Headingley as they faced their close rivals, Northern Diamonds, in the last group stage match of the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

The winner would go straight through to the final at Lord’s, whereas the loser would play South East Stars in an eliminator.

Georgia Adams once again called correctly and opted to bat first, but her decision didn’t pay off as the Vipers lost their first wicket with the third ball of the innings, and found themselves 24-2 inside four overs.

The experienced Georgia Elwiss helped steady the ship after the early couple of wickets.

In the second over off now-Viper Linsey Smith, the cut the left arm spinner for four to open her boundary account, followed up by another cut off England U19 seamer Lizzie Scott the next over.

A period of quiet accumulation followed as the duo of Georgias, Elwiss and Adams, set about getting the Vipers up to a strong total.

Elwiss then brought up the fifty off Jess Woolston with yet another cut shot followed up by a nudge into the leg side.

The fifty partnership was then brought up when the all-rounder powerfully swept Emma Marlow through midwicket for four before the off spinner overpitched, allowing Elwiss to lean into a cover drive.

The Vipers’ hundred came and went, although not without the loss of Georgia Adams, but Elwiss soldiered on.

The former England international brought up her half-century with a sweep of New Zealander Leigh Kasperek, reaching the milestone off 77 balls with six boundaries.

Elwiss’ final boundary of the innings came off Scott as she drove a half volley exquisitely through the covers for four before she was bowled by a turning ball from Marlow for a highly valuable 61.

An unbeaten century from Lauren Winfield-Hill, along with a quickfire 54 from Bess Heath, put an end to the Vipers’ unbeaten season, as the defeat sent them into the eliminator.
