Match Preview: Hampshire Men v Durham, Rothesay County Championship
Hampshire Men return Rothesay County Championship action against Durham at Utilita Bowl over May Bank Holiday weekend
The Ageas Bowl is getting ready to host the potentially series-deciding fifth and final ODI between England and the West Indies on Friday 29 September.
The home of Hampshire Cricket has already hosted two excellent England Internationals this summer, and as Eoin Morgan’s side prepare to lock horns with Jason Holder’s men later this month, we take a look back at the last encounter held between the two sides back in 2012.
Ian Bell struck a magnificent century in that fixture as England eased to a 114-run win in the first-ever one-day international to be played on this ground in June 2012.
Bell (126) played a scintillating innings, progressing at more than a run-a-ball as England posted a respectable 288-6 from their 50 overs despite being put into bat by the West Indies.
In reply, Tim Bresnan (4-34) starred with the ball, and despite a two-over rain delay, the Yorkshire seamer helped dismiss the visitors for 172 in the 34th over to put his side 1-0 up in the three-match series.
Darren Sammy looked to have made a smart decision to insert England when Ravi Rampaul (1-68) claimed the wicket of Alastair Cook (0) in just the third ball of the match.
However, Bell and Warwickshire team-mate Jonathan Trott (42) rebuilt the innings with an impressive partnership of 108 runs before the latter fell to Sunil Narine (1-47), who was playing in his first international match in England.
The spin of Narine and Marlon Samuels kept it tight in the middle-overs, but Bell remained at the crease, moving to a brilliant century off just 95 balls, hitting 13 boundaries in the process.
Despite losing moving Ravi Bopara (8) and Morgan (21) to Samuels (2-43), Bell guided England past 200, and looking on course for a good total in front of a healthy crowd.
His innings came to an end in the 40th over when he edged a Dwayne Bravo (1-55) delivery to wicket-keeper Dinesh Ramdin, who smothered his fourth catch of the innings to leave England on 216-5.
Craig Kieswetter (38*) and Stuart Broad (22*) crunched 72 runs off the final ten overs to propel the hosts to 288-6 at the interval, with help from Bresnan (21) in the middle-order.
After the rain delay, the West Indies were set a victory target of 287 runs to win off 48 overs in the series-opener.
Despite losing Lendl Simmons (15), the visitors got off to a great start, with Dwayne Smith racing to a half-century off jut 38 balls alongside Ramdin.
The pair recorded an important stand of 70 runs in just over ten overs before Smith (56) edged behind to give Bresnan his first wicket of the innings.
Ramdin (22) became Bresnan’s second scalp shortly after moving his side into three figures as the visitors fell from 95-1 to 102-3.
West Indies continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, and never recovered despite a run-a-ball knock from Samuels (30) and soon collapsed to 137-6 with five scalps falling in less than ten overs.
James Anderson (2-48), Stuart Broad (1-40) and Steven Finn (1-29) did the damage with the ball, but captain Sammy (11) was the only batsman outside the top four to score double figures.
The all-rounder moved his side past 150, but they lost two wickets in as many overs to fall from 155-6 to 157-8 and on the brink of defeat.
Rampaul (9) and Darren Bravo (8*) delayed the inevitable, but the final two wickets fell in successive overs with the score on 172 as Bresnan and Graeme Swann (2-21) wrapped up a comprehensive win.
Morgan will be leading out the current crop of England players at the The Ageas Bowl later this month, whilst Samuels will be part of a West Indies squad returning for revenge.
A whole host of international stars are set to be on show, with the likes of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Chris Gayle all in line to feature at the The Ageas Bowl this September.
