Match Preview: Hampshire Hawks Men v Sussex Sharks, Vitality Blast
Hawks Men host Sussex Sharks in el clasicoast as the team look to cement their place in the top four
Hampshire took on Sussex in the opening el clasicoast fixture of 2023 where several Vipers stars were on show.
Charlie Dean captained a Hampshire side featuring 10 Vipers-affiliated players against Georgia Adams’ Sussex containing eight Vipers players.
The opening match at the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy was led by England’s Maia Bouchier and experienced Hampshire all-rounder Dani Ransley who top scored with 27 and 29* respectively on a tricky pitch.
In fact, the poor weather at the start of the season meant that Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Dorset and Oxfordshire all had their games abandoned without a ball bowled, along with Worcestershire, captained by Chloe Hill, and Rhianna Southby’s Surrey.
Back in Brighton, Vipers leg spinner Nancy Harman picked up 2-9 in the opening game, with Daisy Gibb also picking up two wickets as Hampshire ended their innings on 115-6.
It was then the turn of 14-year-old Vipers Academy spinner Eve O’Neill to get in on the act as she picked up figures of 4-13 in her four overs, dismissing Ella McCaughan, Georgia Adams, Nancy Harman and Melbourne Stars’ Nicole Faltum.
Tidy bowling from Vipers seniors Charlie Dean and Finty Trussler helped restrict Sussex to 80-5 to give Hampshire a 35-run victory.
Georgia Adams then showed her experience in the second T20 as she top scored with 25 on the difficult BACA wicket, with Vipers Academy’s Mary Taylor close behind with 23 opening the batting.
Southern Vipers’ Alice Monaghan (2-11) and Finty Trussler (3-13) lead the way with the ball for Hampshire as Sussex closed their innings on 91-7 in their 20 overs.
Strong bowling second time around from Sussex restricted Hampshire to 74 all out as Daisy Gibb took 2-6 in three overs, and Mary Taylor took 2-18 in 3.1 overs, with six of the seven bowlers all picking up at least one wicket as Sussex won by 17 runs.
