Southern Vipers Overseas Roundup: Hotting Up In The South East

Georgia Adams and Rhianna Southby were both in match action this last week, with England also announcing their squads for their women’s’ tours to New Zealand

Southern Vipers’ captain Georgia Adams returned to state action to lead New South Wales against ACT – Australian Capital Territory – in the Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL).

The first of their two matches didn’t go exactly to plan, with the winless ACT sealing their first victory of the Australian summer by four wickets.

But with the dawn of a new month, the Breakers got back to winning ways, with Adams scoring nine boundaries on her way to 61 off 69, and she put on a 75-run partnership with Sunrisers’ Saskia Horley.

Having set ACT a target of 282, Adams claimed two key wickets in just 19 balls.

With Carly Leeson on 96, she top edged a sweep to Sammy-Jo Johnson to give Adams’ her first scalp, before she wrapped up victory for NSW by cleaning up Chelsea Moscript to give the Breakers a 34-run win.

The victory, NSW’s fourth of the season, pushes the Breakers up to 17 points from 10 games, and with only a maximum of eight points remaining from the final two matches – both against South Australia – New South Wales cannot qualify for the knockout stages of the WNCL.

Adams however remains NSW’s leading run scorer, with 278 runs in eight innings, at an average just shy of 35, with two half-centuries to her name.

Heading south from Canberra to Melbourne, Rhianna Southby took to the field for Box Hill CC as they took on Essendon Maribyrnong Park.

The visitors made 170-8 in their 50 overs in what was a quiet innings with the gloves for Southby.

In the chase, she was run out for five, but the match went down to the final ball but unfortunately Box Hill couldn’t quite get over the line, finishing just one run shy of Essendon Maribyrnong’s total, needing eight runs off the final over.

Box Hill sit third in the One Day table, with 29 points from eight games, with five wins and three defeats.

Their next fixture is on Sunday 11th February against fifth-placed Prahran before a final group match against Plenty Valley on 18th February.

On the international stage, both Southby and Adams, along with Vipers’ teammate Freya Kemp, have been named in the England Women A squad to tour New Zealand, whilst five Vipers are in the England Women’s IT20 and ODI squads.

Linsey Smith returns to an England squad for the first time since 2020, and will be part of the squad for the first three IT20s along with Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, and Charlie Dean, with Danni Wyatt returning to the fold for the final two matches after the conclusion of the WPL.

Bell, Bouchier, Dean, and Wyatt will also play a part in the ODI series which begins of 31st March.
