The Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) has come to an end for Georgia Adams and her New South Wales Breakers, as she rounded her campaign off with back-to-back wins against South Australia.
Adams, captaining the Breakers, made 34 off just 24 in their rain-affected first match at Cricket Central in Sydney, as the home side posted 142-4 in 22 overs.
The Breakers bowlers were then able to restrict South Australia to 135-5, with Adams conceding just 12 runs from three overs.
In the second match two days later, Adams made 42 from 43, with four fours and a six, as NSW racked up 265-9 in 50 overs, with wicket-keeper Tahlia Wilson scoring 100.
Once again, Adams was economical with the ball with 11 runs coming off her four overs, of which one was a maiden, and South Australia fell 70 runs short as NSW rounded off their season with a win.
The two victories saw the Breakers leapfrog South Australia into 5th place, with the final of the WNCL being contested between Tasmania and new signing Charli Knott’s Queensland on Friday 23rd February.
Speaking of Knott, Queensland Fire also recorded back-to-back wins against Western Australia in Brisbane.
In a total of 304-5 in 45 overs, which included a century from Georgia Voll and fifties from Laura Harris and Northern Diamonds’ Lauren Winfield-Hill.
Knott made a quickfire 34* off 25, with five boundaries to propel the Fire past 300.
With the ball, Knott wrapped up victory by claiming the wicket of Zoe Britcliffe as WA were skittled for 136 to give Queensland a 182-run win.
The visitors were then unable to recover, making just 115 in the second match, as Knott’s Queensland won by six wickets using just over half of their allotted balls.
A loss for Tasmania meant that Queensland closed the gap at the top of the table to sit just two points behind the islanders.
Over in Melbourne, Rhianna Southby’s Box Hill CC succumbed to defeat against Plenty Valley in their penultimate group match.
Southby top scored with 36 as Box Hill were bowled out for 154 and despite some magic with the gloves in Plenty Valley’s reply – two catches and a stumping – the home side ended victorious by six wickets.
Despite the defeat, Box Hill’s fourth place earns them a spot in the Elimination Final of the Victorian Premier League, with Rhianna Southby’s side taking on third-placed Prahran CC on Sunday 25th February.
Out in India, Danni Wyatt has joined up with her UP Warriorz teammates and Charlotte Edwards is heading up Mumbai Indians in their quest to win back-to-back WPL trophies.
The competition kicks off on Friday 23rd February with Mumbai Indians taking on Delhi Capitals at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, whilst UP Warriorz’ first match is on Saturday 24th February against Royal Challengers Bangalore.
