Hampshire Bowling Duo Selected for England Duty
Lauren Bell and Linsey Smith have been selected in the England Women's squad to face West Indies
Southern Vipers are delighted to announce that left arm spin bowler Linsey Smith has been awarded a professional contract at the club.
The left arm spinner started her career at the Vipers in 2016, where she was part of the side that beat Western Storm in the inaugural final of the KIA Super League, and went on to feature in 2017 before moving to Loughborough Lightning, and later Yorkshire (now Northern) Diamonds.
Smith made her international debut against Bangladesh in the West Indies during the 2018 Women’s World T20, and took career best international figures of 3-18 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2019.
She made her last international appearance in Northampton against the West Indies in June 2019 where she took the wickets of Hayley Matthews and Stacy-Ann King.
In 2021, Smith was the joint leading wicket taker for Northern Diamonds, with 22 wickets with a best of 5-34, her second career five wicket haul, against Western Storm in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. She went on to top the wicket taking charts for the Diamonds in the 2022 RHF Trophy with 13 wickets a runs per wicket rate of 18.07.
Smith re-joins the Vipers having beaten the side in the final of the 2022 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, where she took 2-24 and scored 27 runs opening the batting.
Linsey has proven to be a tough and highly respected opponent in recent seasons, and in her we’ve got an experienced, proven performer who offers plenty with bat and ball whilst being a fine inner ring fielder. We’ve endured some tough battles with her and the Diamonds in the recent past, and I am really heartened that future tussles with our respected northern opponents will see Linsey in orange and black rather than the two-tone blue! It’s great to have her back at the team she started her career with.
