Southern Vipers To Represent England In Commonwealth Games

Maia Bouchier, Freya Kemp and Danni Wyatt are included in England’s 15-player squad to play in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

Three Southern Vipers players are included in the 15-player squad to represent England in the Commonwealth Games for the first time.

Batters Danni Wyatt and Maia Bouchier, plus all-rounder Freya Kemp have been selected in the England squad for the T20 competition as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Wyatt is regarded as one of the most dangerous, hard-hitting batters in world cricket, with two T20I centuries to her name, and a career strike rate of 124 across her 124-match career so far.

We’ve got one eye on taking our T20 game forward, but we do believe this squad gives us the best chance of success in the Commonwealth Games – and that’s something to be really excited by. We now have players across the domestic game putting their hand up for selection, which is testament to the regional game, and we have real strength in depth, and that’s so important.

Lisa Keightley, England Head Coach

Bouchier, 23, has also represented England three times in the T20I format, with 26 runs to her name, and was Southern Vipers’ second leading run scorer (after Wyatt) in the 2022 Charlotte Edwards Cup.

Kemp, aged just 17, impressed in the Vipers’ successful Charlotte Edwards’ Cup campaign, scoring 54 runs with a strike rate of 115, and taking nine wickets – second only to Charlie Dean.

The correlation between Vipers team success and England player selection this summer has been hugely refreshing and as an organisation we are immensely proud. To see Charlie Dean and Lauren Bell turn out for the national team is testament to the progressive state of the elite domestic programme, and the work that Charlotte Edwards and her team are doing across our senior squad.
We are delighted at the inclusion of Maia Bouchier and Academy graduate Freya Kemp to the forthcoming Commonwealth Games squad, whilst we are equally as delighted that Danni Wyatt is included, as she's been in the best of nick this summer and will relish the T20 format. We send them off with our best wishes and hope they return with a gold medal to show for their hard work.

Adam Carty, Regional Director of Cricket

Both Bouchier and Kemp represented England A in warmup matches against South Africa, with Bouchier scoring 81 runs across two innings, whilst Kemp picked up the wicket of Anneke Bosch for just a single, as England A won both matches.

It’s such a massive opportunity for us and for the game to compete in the Commonwealth Games, especially on home soil. When you’re younger, you watch these multi-sports events but, as a cricketer, you don’t imagine you’ll be out there representing Team England. It’s a hugely exciting squad and for us as a group to have a chance to make history and be the first women’s cricketers to medal at the Commonwealth Games is something that can really drive us forward.

Heather Knight, England Captain

Men’s 50-over cricket was contested in the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, but 2022 will be the first time that women’s cricket, of any format, is included in the Commonwealth Games.
