Southern Vipers Want To ‘Win Both Trophies’ In 2022

Southern Vipers Head Coach, Charlotte Edwards, wants the team to go one step further in ‘her trophy’ this season

The Southern Vipers are the most successful team since the new regional setup was put in place in 2020.

They have won both Rachael Heyhoe Flint trophies, beating the Northern Diamonds on both occasions, and reached the semi-final of the brand-new Charlotte Edwards Cup in its inaugural season in 2021.

But the recent successes won’t halt the Vipers from aiming for yet more silverware in 2022 according to Head Coach, Charlotte Edwards.

She said: “We want to win both trophies, I think we’re an ambitious team.”

But it’s not just the trophies she’s after, but for more players to go on to represent the national team.

“The Vipers have been successful in the last couple of years, so we want to continue that.

“But equally, we want to continue to develop England cricketers which we’ve done really, really well in the last 12 months, so we’re really proud of that.”

Powerful batter Danni Wyatt, along with off-spinner Charlie Dean, are in England’s main Cricket World Cup squad, whilst fast bowler Lauren Bell is a travelling reserve.

Both Wyatt and Dean starred in England’s ODI series win against New Zealand, whilst batter Maia Bouchier made her T20I debut in the following series.

“They’ve had a really big winter, haven’t they?” Edwards said.

“We’re so proud of the three girls in New Zealand at the moment, Deano getting her four-for [against India], I’m sure Wyatt will come into runs soon, and I think Belly is having the time of her life out there.”

Whilst Bouchier didn’t make the World Cup squad, she stayed in Australia after the Ashes to gain some valuable experience playing for Western Australia in the Women’s National Cricket League, where she scored her highest ever List A score of 79 against Queensland.

Edwards said: “We keep developing out players, and hopefully they’ll come back and they’ll be ready to start the season with a bit of a sun tan and get going for the Vipers.”
