Tom Prest Prepares For Semi-Final

The Hampshire all-rounder captains England in Under 19 World Cup semi-final

Having made his Hampshire debut in all three formats in 2021, despite still only being 18, Tom Prest established himself as one of the country’s most promising talents.

Prest’s involvement with England Under 19’s over the summer,  along with his county experience, set him up as an ideal candidate to captain the team during the World Cup which has taken place early this year in the West Indies.

Having performed sensationally with the bat, including an unbeaten 154 against the UAE during their convincing 189 run win, England now find themselves in the Semi-Final.

The Hampshire man was obviously delighted,

“It's an unbelievable feeling, really. We've obviously come here with the intention of trying to win the whole World Cup. So, we're a step closer to that.”

Prest hailed the mood around the camp as a big reason for the success in the tournament.

“Yeah, it's a pretty tight knit group of lads at the moment, obviously we played the Series against the West Indies in the UK and then went out to Sri Lanka pre-Christmas. We've been together for pretty much the whole month as well. We're pretty close now, that kind of makes it even better, we all want to play for each other on the pitch.”

Although being new to captaincy, the Hampshire youngster understands the responsibility of the role and welcomes it.

“It's pretty surreal really. Being captain of an England side. Doing all the media stuff pre and post games is a new experience, but its great fun doing it. Obviously, it’s an honour to have been asked to captain England at the World Cup.”

Prest was positive regarding his batting throughout the tournament.

“It’s been pretty nice to get a few, against Canada, I felt I missed out getting out for 93 and I felt that was a big score that I kind of missed out on. It was pretty nice to bat for a long period of time against the UAE and get that big score.”

With his family being in Antigua watching him represent his country, he acknowledged their contribution to his success and getting him to this position

“Yeah, it's nice for them at the moment, they have done a lot for me, taking me to and from the Ageas and then to training and sacrificing evenings and weekends kind of growing up. I guess for them to be out in Antigua watching me at a World Cup is it's pretty special for them, I think they’re loving it at the moment.”
