Prest and England Come Up Just Short In ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup Final

Hampshire’s Tom Prest led his team on a sensational run during the ICC U19s Men's World Cup in the West Indies - we've taken a look back at England’s journey to the Final

England would come out roaring against the Tigers of Bangladesh in their opening Group A fixture. The Young Lions would secure victory by seven wickets, after bowling the opposition out for 97. Prest described the triumph as a “perfect start”.

Momentum would carry over into England’s next fixture as England defeated Canada by 106 runs. Skipper Prest would contribute 93 runs towards his team’s total, hitting ten fours in a classy innings.

England would display no mercy in their final Group A fixture easily cruising past the United Arab Emirates by 189 runs. Hampshire’s 18-year-old showed the peak of his potential, smashing 154 from 119 balls, with 13 fours and four sixes in England’s giant total of 362. The win helped England finish top of Group A with a perfect record.

The next challenge for England would be taking on South Africa in the quarter-final. Jacob Bethell hit a scintillating 88 from 42 balls as Prest’s side triumphed over the Proteas by six wickets.

History was within reach for Prest and England, who were one win away from reaching their first ICC-U19 World Cup Final since 1998. A disciplined Afghanistan team would give England a tough test, but they would prevail running out 15-run victors. For the first time in over 20 years, England were within touching distance of becoming World champions.

However, it wasn’t to be the fairy tale ending as India proved tough opposition – bowling England out for 189, before securing their fifth World Cup title by four wickets.

Though the campaign didn’t end in glory, captain Prest was positive about the experience, “It's been amazing, we've all really enjoyed it. It's something we'll never forget and we're all very proud of our achievements."
