Trio To Stay At Utilita Bowl With Hampshire

Freya Davies, Rhianna Southby, and Mary Taylor all remain at Utilita Bowl having signed for Hampshire

Bowler Freya Davies, all-rounder Mary Taylor, and wicketkeeper Rhianna Southby will all remain at Utilita Bowl as part of Hampshire’s Tier 1 women’s team.

The trio all played for Southern Vipers, the regional team based at Utilita Bowl, in 2024 as the side reached the semi-finals of both the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

Davies featured 35 times for England from 2019-2023 and took 33 wickets, whilst Taylor is an up-and-coming fast bowler who has competed in five matches for England U19s.

Southby is much touted for future England honours, and was selected on England A’s tour of New Zealand in early 2024.

Born in Chichester, Davies made her county debut for Sussex against Middlesex in 2010 before featuring for Western Storm in the Kia Super League in 2016.

She played for South East Stars in the regional era of women’s domestic cricket from 2020-23, where she claimed 24 wickets in 27 appearances.

I loved my season with Southern Vipers earlier this year, and I’m pleased to remain at Utilita Bowl as part of the new structure with Hampshire. We have a great group here and hopefully I can contribute to bringing some silverware back to Utilita Bowl next summer.

Freya Davies, Hampshire bowler

Freya is a proven and highly respected new ball bowler, and a leading figure in the 2024 Vipers squad. I’m delighted we’ve retained her services for 2025. She’ll be an integral player and cultural leader as we strive to make safe passage from regional to county cricket - a great signing.

Adam Carty, Regional Director of Women's Cricket

Davies claimed 27 wickets in her season with Southern Vipers in 2024 as she helped the Utilita Bowl-based side to the semi-finals of both the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and Charlotte Edwards Cup.

Fast bowler Taylor claimed two wickets on her debut for Southern Vipers in the 2022 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy eliminator, and made her name known to a wider audience in The Hundred the following year.

I'm thrilled to be able to continue playing cricket within the new structure and even more delighted to be representing Hampshire. To be able to work with such a wonderful group of people and call the Utilita bowl home is amazing.

Mary Taylor, Hampshire all-rounder

Mary is a genuine all-rounder in the making. For a seamer in her professional infancy, she bowled plenty of tough overs for the Vipers in 2024, and for that she’ll come on lots. We retain a high expectation that Mary’s potential with the bat will come to 1st team fruition, sooner rather than later, following strong performances at 2nd XI level in 2024.

Adam Carty, Regional Director of Women's Cricket

In her first game for Southern Brave, aged 18, she took 3-18 in 20 balls against Trent Rockets as she played in place of Lauren Bell.

Also a threat with the bat in hand, Taylor scored a T20 century against West Indies U19s in 2024, and also made 82 off 47 balls for Southern Vipers 2nd XI.

23-year-old Southby moved to Utilita Bowl ahead of the 2023 season and quickly settled into life on the south coast.

For Southern Vipers in 2024, Southby claimed the second-most dismissals (catches and stumpings) of any ‘keeper in the country with 23, and the most in the Charlotte Edwards Cup with 14.

I am really excited to have signed for Hampshire.
It’s felt like home to me since moving to Utilita Bowl in 2022.

Rhianna Southby, Hampshire wicket keeper

Rihanna is one of, if not the leading glove women, in the domestic game, and I’m delighted to see her remain at the club, as part of the transition from region to county. Rhi, brings great energy, and is progressing really nicely with the bat. Her signing is great business for the county.

Adam Carty, Regional Director of Women's Cricket

She moved from South East Stars and her native Surrey at the end of the 2022 season and was drafted by Charlotte Edwards to Southern Brave, where she helped the team win their first Hundred title as she claimed 11 dismissals including two catches and two stumpings in the same match against Northern Superchargers.
