2022 Vitality Blast champions Hampshire Hawks begin their 2023 T20 campaign at Taunton against Somerset on Wednesday 24th May.
We are counting down the days until the Hawks’ title defence begins and today marks 83 days until then. The Hawks travelled to Radlett to take on Middlesex in last year’s Vitality Blast and opening batter Ben McDermott put on a masterclass in power hitting, smashing 83 runs from just 30 balls.
James Vince won the toss for the Hawks, electing to field first. An impressive bowling display, including figures of 3-14 from Liam Dawson, saw Middlesex restricted to just 142/7 from their 20 overs.
This brought Vince and McDermott to the crease, where they put the Hawks firmly in control.
The pair set a new opening partnership record for Hampshire in T20s as they combined for 132 runs.
Facing just 30 balls, McDermott scored 83 of those runs, at a strike rate of 276.66. His innings included five fours and an incredible nine sixes.
He had to depart in the tenth over before the skipper saw the visitors over the line with a half-century to win the match by nine wickets.
