Hear the thoughts of Graeme Welch following his move to Hampshire as bowling coach
After success during The Hundred with Southern Brave, and helping Warwickshire to the County Championship, Graeme Welch has joined Hampshire as lead bowling coach.
When asked about joining Hampshire, Welch expressed his admiration for the county;
“I’ve always been a fan of Hampshire, I played against them a long time ago. I was down here for The Hundred, I was really impressed with the facilities and with how Giles White worked.”
Naturally, Hampshire’s bowling attack was the main topic of focus, and Welch was full of praise;
“It’s one of the best in the country, Mo Abbas, Kyle Abbott, Keith Barker, James Fuller, all very experienced bowlers and I look forward to working with them.”
Keith Barker has helped Welch acclimatise quickly and learn more about the younger bowlers in the Hampshire side;
“I’ve been in touch with Keith (Barker) and he is really impressed with the bowlers coming through, Scott Currie, Brad Wheal and there are a few younger lads underneath as well which I’m looking forward to getting my teeth stuck into and to help them develop as Hampshire bowlers and hopefully get them playing for England.”
Welch hopes his trophy-winning experience can help push Hampshire over the line in the next few years;
“I was involved with a few trophies last year, a County Championship, The Hundred and then the Bob Willis Trophy, and hopefully I can bring that success here. I was one when Hampshire last won the Championship so I’ll try to put that right in the next few years.”
When asked about his proudest coaching achievement, Welch was very modest;
“I haven’t really got one to be honest, it’s part of the job, trying to help people improve everyday”
