July's Player of The Month

Hampshire had a July to remember after they were crowned 2022 Vitality Blast champions at Edgbaston on Finals Day.

The month started with a victory over Gloucestershire to confirm their spot in Vitality Blast Quarter-Finals, before they defeated Sussex Sharks in the second ‘el clasicoast’ of the season to conclude the group stages.

A Quarter-Final clash with an in-form Birmingham Bears was next up and the Hawks’ attack left Edgbaston shocked, bowling the hosts out for just 82 to book their place back at Finals Day.

Before that though, Hampshire welcomed Warwickshire to The Ageas Bowl in the LV= Insurance County Championship and recorded an eight-wicket victory.

It was then time for a return to Edgbaston for T20 Finals Day where, first up, the Hawks took on Somerset in the Semi-Finals. An all-round team performance helped them on their way to a 37-run win and a place in the Final to take on Lancashire Lightning.

A dramatic match, which went right down to the wire, saw the Hawks emerge triumphant to pick up a historic third T20 title, their first since 2012.

To close out the month Hampshire first beat Gloucestershire at Cheltenham in the County Championship and are currently playing against Yorkshire in Scarborough.

Skipper James Vince had the ecstasy of lifting the Vitality Blast trophy, and was named Player of the Tournament to top off a memorable month.

Our Australian bowler Nathan Ellis had a stellar month on the Hawks’ run to Vitality Blast glory. His death bowling proved vital and in the Final, even after some no ball drama, he was able to secure the win.

Ellis took seven wickets in the four matches he played during the month – including figures of 3-4 against Birmingham Bears – while boasting an economy rate of 5.73.

His fellow countrymen, Ben McDermott, was also an important player for the Hawks. Scores in the 60s in both the Quarter-Final and the Final helped the Hawks to good scores in both.

The opening batter scored 188 runs during July, at a strike rate of 131, and finished the Vitality Blast with the second most sixes in the tournament.

James Fuller’s performances across both the Vitality Blast and the County Championship have been impressive all season long, and this month was no different. The highlight came against Birmingham Bears where Fuller recorded figures of 4-17 in his four overs.

In T20’s the all-rounder hit 89 runs striking at 122 and took 8 wickets with an economy rate of 5.71, as well as contributing with both bat and ball in both four-day fixtures in July.

19-year-old Tom Prest put in some notable performances with the bat during the Hawks’ Vitality Blast campaign as he became a fixture at number three in the side.

His 64 against Somerset on Finals Day was enough to earn him the Man of the Match award as he went on to make 109 runs for the month.

Liam Dawson is another who has performed well in both the T20 and First-Class formats this month, with a 92 against Warwickshire and innings figures of 4-44 against Gloucestershire, both in the County Championship.

The all-rounder was a big part of the Hawks potent bowling attack in the Vitality Blast and took five wickets in the month.

South African bowler Kyle Abbott only plays in Hampshire’s County Championship side and has been lethal with the ball in July.

Figures of 5-45 in the first innings against Warwickshire was followed up by 6-76 against Gloucestershire in their second innings, which included a hat-trick either side of lunch on the fourth day.

He has also taken a six-wicket haul in the first innings of the game against Yorkshire going on currently.
