Dewald Brevis

Batter

Dewald Brevis is a right-handed batter and right-arm leg spin bowler.

He was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and joined the club for the 2025 Vitality Blast, with the option to play in the County Championship.

Brevis, who was born in 2003, shot into the limelight through his prolific run scoring in the 2022 ICC Men’s U19 Cricket World Cup where he played against his future Hawks teammate Tom Prest.

The South African scored a mammoth 506 runs in six innings where he passed the 50 mark in all but one innings, and reached three figures twice in the competition.

He went on to be picked up by Mumbai Indians for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) where he scored 230 runs with a best of 49.

Later the same year, he smashed 162 off just 57 balls for Northerns against Free State in the CSA T20 Challenge, the domestic T20 competition in South Africa.

On his debut in the inaugural SA20 in 2023, he made 70* for MI Cape Town against Paarl Royals and was his side’s second-leading run scorer in the competition.

Brevis was once again signed by Mumbai Indians in the 2024 IPL where he featured three times and scored 69 runs before playing for MI New York in Major League Cricket; he made 85 runs in four games with a best of 56 in his second match against San Francisco Unicorns.

In the 2025 edition of the SA20, Brevis wracked up 291 runs at an average of 48.50 whilst striking at 184 – the highest of any batter who batted five innings or more.

He was also the sixth leading run scorer in the whole competition, and MI Cape Town’s second leading scorer behind Ryan Rickleton.

Brevis joins Hampshire Hawks ahead of the 2025 season with his countryman Lhuan-dre Pretorius, and is expected to bat in the middle order and bowl occasional leg spin.
