Match Preview: Hampshire Men v Durham, Rothesay County Championship
Hampshire Men return Rothesay County Championship action against Durham at Utilita Bowl over May Bank Holiday weekend
Mark Stoneman is a left-handed opening batter.
He was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and joined the club on a short-term deal in 2025 having been released by Middlesex at the end of the 2024 season.
He made his professional debut for his native Durham in 2007 and forged a prolific domestic career, racking up nearly 15,000 First-Class runs by the time he joined the Rose and Crown of Hampshire.
Stoneman spent ten seasons with Durham where he scored over 7,500 runs, then joined Surrey for the 2017 season and helped them win the Championship title in 2018 in which he reached 1,000 First-Class runs.
He has also scored over 3,500 List A runs with seven centuries, his best of 144* coming against Nottinghamshire in 2017.
His impressive season earned him an England call-up and he made his Test debut against the West Indies at Edgbaston.
Stoneman scored his first international half-century in his second match at Headingley, and was handed a spot on the plane for the 2017-18 Ashes down under.
He started strongly with 53 in the opening match at the Gabba, with another half-century coming at the WACA in Perth, but England would ultimately lose the series 5-0.
He retained his place for the subsequent tour of New Zealand and made 55 in the opening match and 60 in the second, but played his last Test at Lord’s as England were defeated by Pakistan.
The nuggety opener then moved north of the Thames to join Middlesex on loan in 2021 before making the move permanent in 2022.
He scored over 2,500 runs with seven 100s for the Seaxes in three and a half seasons, with a top score of 174 coming in just his second game for the Lord’s-based side.
