Women's Health Physiotherapists

Physiotherapists who specialise in women’s health will typically have worked as musculoskeletal physiotherapists before undertaking additional training to become specialists within this area of medicine.

Women’s health physiotherapists treat women of all ages, with a wide range of urogynaecological complaints which can include issues such as:

  • Stress urinary incontinence
  • Bladder urgency or overactive bladder
  • Pelvic organ prolapses
  • Disorders of the pelvic floor
  • Sexual function disorder such as vaginismus
  • Antenatal and postnatal musculoskeletal problems, including pelvic girdle pain or diastasis

Bladder Disorders

1 in 3 women experience bladder problems at some stage of their lives, this is a common but very treatable condition.  During your initial assessment we will ask you a series of questions to help us understand the problems you are having, and then you will usually be offered an assessment of your pelvic floor.

The information gained from both the subjective and physical assessment will enable us to offer a specific exercise programme which is tailored to your needs.

We can offer as much support as you need, and will monitor and progress your exercises as indicated when reviewing your progress.

As part of your initial appointment you may be offered an internal examination.  This form of examination will help ascertain the diagnosis, and direct your treatment, and your consent will be sought prior to anything happening.  The examination will be explained to you beforehand and you will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout,  but you can chose to opt out of this part of the session if you wish.  We want you to be comfortable and happy throughout your session so you are very welcome to bring a friend of family member to your appointment, should you wish.

Pregnancy

During Pregnancy

Women often find that they develop aches and pains during pregnancy, or find that existing joint problems get worse, but help is at hand with our women’s health physiotherapy service.  We will look at movements of the back, pelvis and hips to screen for underlying dysfunctions or weaknesses and then we can discuss a range of treatments and interventions to help you through your pregnancy.  Helping you to understand and manage your symptoms is our goal so that you can enjoy your pregnancy as much as possible.

We also offer Pregnancy scans via FirstSight, learn more here
