Brad Wheal Confirms Retirement From The Game

30-year-old South African-born bowler Brad Wheal has announced his retirement from professional cricket due to injury

Pace bowler Brad Wheal has announced his retirement from the professional game.

Wheal, 30, debuted for Hampshire in 2015 and has played 131 times for the Rose and Crown across all three formats. He took 239 wickets and claimed three five-wicket hauls, one in each format of the game.

He played one County Championship game for Hampshire in 2026 before being sidelined with a stress fracture.

I’ve loved my time at Hampshire and as a professional cricketer, but unfortunately, recurring injuries have forced my hand and I’ve made the decision to retire from playing cricket. It’s not been an easy decision, but one I am at peace with. I’ve had four stress fractures in my back and recently had surgery on my knee, and ultimately my body can’t cope with the demands of fast bowling anymore.

I feel like I’ve had a good career but also one where I wish I could have been on the park more. Hampshire has been an incredible place for me, and I’ve been honoured to play here for 12 years.

I’ve made lifelong friends and learnt incredible life lessons along the way, and made memories which I will cherish forever, such as winning the Blast in 2022 and representing Scotland in four World Cups.

I’m incredibly thankful to all my teammates and support staff; I’ve spent a lot of time with the physios and doctors and S&C staff over the years, and I’ll be sure to stay in touch and enjoy watching Hampshire from afar.

To the fans, I can’t thank them enough for their support. They’ve always had our backs, and it’s been incredibly humbling and honouring to have spent this amount of time at such an incredible club.

Brad Wheal

Wheal came to Hampshire in 2015, aged 18, and has taken 51 wickets in 44 matches for Scotland.

He made his debut for the club against Middlesex at Utilita Bowl in May 2015, then took four wickets against the same opposition at Lord’s the next month. He would later earn his county cap in 2021.

Wheal has won two trophies during his time with the Rose and Crown, helping the club win the 2018 Royal London Cup title and the Vitality Blast in 2022, during which he claimed five for 38 against Glamorgan.

In 2016, Wheal picked up career-best figures of six for 51 against Nottinghamshire in the County Championship, and his five for 47 helped Hampshire to a thrilling victory against Lancashire in the One Day Cup at Old Trafford in 2023.

Brad has been a great servant to the club over the last decade, and we are incredibly sad that injury has cut his career short. A reliable performer across all formats, he played an important part in helping us win a number of one-day trophies and challenge at the top of the Championship, as well as representing Scotland at World Cups.

He is a hugely popular member of the squad and leaves behind many friends and memories at the club. We wish Brad all the best for the future and look forward to welcoming him back to the Utilita Bowl as he begins the next chapter of his life.

On the international stage, Wheal has played in four ICC Men’s T20 World Cups and took two for 32 as Scotland defeated the West Indies in the 2022 edition of the tournament.

His best figures for his country came against Hong Kong in 2016 when he picked up three for 20, which saw Scotland to a 37-run win.

In The Hundred, Wheal played six times for London Spirit from 2021 to 2022 and took ten wickets with best figures of four for 17 against Manchester Originals.
