England all-rounder Freya Kemp will leave Hampshire and join Surrey ahead of the 2027 season
Hampshire can confirm that Freya Kemp will leave the club ahead of the 2027 season to join Surrey.
One of the brightest young talents in the English game, Kemp first established herself at regional level with Southern Vipers in 2022 when she made her professional debut aged just 17 years old.
She claimed nine wickets in the Charlotte Edwards Cup, including figures of 2/13 on debut against North West Thunder, as the Vipers went on to win the competition.
After a back injury interrupted her progress in 2023, Kemp worked hard to return to action and continued her development as a powerful middle-order batter, which culminated in a mature knock of 32* to help the Vipers to the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy title, having already won the Charlotte Edwards Cup earlier in the season.
For Hampshire, following the restructure of domestic women’s cricket, Kemp struck her maiden senior century in a One Day Cup match against The Blaze at Utilita Bowl. She made 109, coming out to bat at 34/3, and helped Hampshire win the match by 80 runs on their way to finishing runners-up in the competition.
She continued to play a prominent role during the 2026 season. Kemp made 77 from only 63 balls in Hampshire’s One-Day Cup eliminator against Surrey, sharing a 110-run partnership with Maia Bouchier as the hosts secured an emphatic 194-run victory. She then contributed 52 from 46 deliveries in the final against The Blaze.
Kemp’s achievements on the international stage have provided further cause for pride. She made her IT20 debut against South Africa in July 2022 before finishing as England’s leading wicket-taker at the Commonwealth Games, ahead of experienced bowlers Katherine Sciver-Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone. Later that summer, aged 17 years and 145 days, she became the youngest England woman to score an IT20 half-century with 51 against India.
In The Hundred, Kemp featured for Southern Brave from 2022-2025, and Welsh Fire in 2026. She won the competition with Brave in 2023 as she contributed 79 runs at a strike rate of 146.
Kempy has been a great servant to the region and county. We will miss her generous presence, her tenacity and her ability on the field. It’s a shame to lose her at this stage of her journey, but I respect the circumstances and reasoning. We wish Freya well.
