First team players Gavin Griffiths (6-27) and Will Smith (93) showcased their talents for Hampshire’s Second XI but were unable to prevent a narrow one-wicket defeat to Kent in the Second XI Trophy.
Smith’s experience was clear to see as he hit 93 off 11 balls in a measure innings which helped Hampshire post a competitive total of 238, despite being bowled out with eight balls remaining on the Nursery Ground.
Griffiths then demolished Kent’s batting order by taking six wickets, five of which were taken by keeper Ed Ellis, only for Z Crawley to score an unbeaten ton and secure victory for the visitors with four balls to spare.
Jake Goodwin provided further evidence to suggest why he should continue to be selected in Hampshire’s team, hitting 42 off 51 balls in an assured knock, as Smith led from the front in Hampshire's batting innings. Tail ender Dan Smith usefully boosted the home side's score to 238 with his 17 runs.
Dan Smith displayed all-round ability to take key wickets as Hampshire took to the field, finding an edge from Haggett (24) and running out Hartley (23) before taking a superb catch in the slips, as the star man Griffiths removed Riley (7).
