Global cricketing giants return to Utilita Bowl in 2025
Southampton Hawks Academy have won their opening match of the season
The winter of 2021 saw Hampshire Cricket and Cantell School establish a new partnership with the ambition of providing new, high-level coaching to promising young cricketers, who might not otherwise have had access to such provision.
As a direct output of the partnership, this spring has seen the formation of the Hampshire Hawks City Academy programme and the programme’s first team – Southampton Hawks Academy – are now underway in their inaugural season.
The team, which aims to give those from disadvantaged backgrounds increased access to cricket, have won their first match against the Hampshire State Jets.
With the State Jets batting first wickets were shared amongst the bowlers, with Said Jalali and Iqrar Mohammad taking two wickets each, and Taimoor Shah and Yusuf Khan both picked up a wicket apiece to keep the Jets to 106-6 off their 20 overs.
After a tricky start to Southampton Hawks Academy’s reply, Rocky Singh and Kit Pearson rebuilt the innings whilst both striking just under a run a ball, before captain Azar Mehmood hit 34* with five fours and a six to seal victory with just two balls to spare.
Next up for Southampton Hawks Academy is a match against Calmore on Wednesday 1st June.
