Match Preview: Hampshire v Nottinghamshire - Specsavers County Championship

Hampshire head to Newclose, IOW, to contest the first first-class fixture to be played on the Isle of Wight since 1962

Hampshire followed up their Royal London One-Day Cup south group success with victory in the Specsavers County Championship against Warwickshire at Edgbaston, and Sam Northeast’s side will be hoping to secure back-to-back wins when they travel to Newclose to take on Nottinghamshire next week.

The fixture marks the first first-class fixture to be played on the Isle of Wight since 1962.

Hampshire Squad:

A 14-man squad has been named for the trip to Newclose, with Ian Holland and Mason Crane both featuring alongside the final XI that defeated Warwickshire at the The Ageas Bowl earlier this week.

Overseas batsman Ajinkya Rahane is also included and is set to make his Hampshire debut on the Isle of Wight, after the Indian Test star arrived in the UK on Thursday.

James Vince is unavailable for selection due to his international commitments with England and Sam Northeast will captain the side in his absence once again. The stand-in skipper has been prolific with the bat so far this campaign, totalling 345 runs at an average of 86.25, and he’ll be crucial to his side’s chances. After an excellent career-best century last time out against Warwickshire, Tom Alsop will also be hoping to add to his tally in style this week.

The evergreen Fidel Edwards and pace partner Kyle Abbott have once again been the pick of the red-ball bowlers so far this year, with 28 wickets between them at an average of less than 19. Both bowlers will be hoping to make their presence felt at Newclose this week.

The Opposition:

Two defeats in their opening three four-day fixtures has ensured Nottinghamshire have had a testing start to their 2019 red-ball campaign.

An eight-wicket defeat against Essex inside three days earlier this week saw Steven Mullaney’s side pick up just three points and they’ll hope to bounce back and claim their first victory of the season.

England seamer Stuart Broad is available for the visitors and the veteran has been in good form so far this season, picking up 10 wickets at an average of 21.40 – he’s likely to be the biggest threat with the ball. Off-season recruit Joe Clarke has been the star man with the bat so far, striking 262 runs in the first three contests.
