A passionate audience over a hundred strong discussed five club proposals to revitalise the recreational game in Hampshire at a packed The Ageas Bowl last week. 

Tony Oxley, Clubs and Leagues Working Party chair, encouraged clubs and players to go back to their members and consult ahead of the Hampshire Cricket League AGM on 15th February.

Bashley, Brockenhurst, Lock's Heath, Sway and Verwood are among the clubs polling their members on a league restructure, earlier starts, and in regional leagues a player loans trial, wides and fewer overs.

The number of Hampshire teams starting the season continues to fall from 347 (in 2014) to 306.

428 games (8%) have been forfeited by clubs unable to fulfil games since the start of the 2016 season, and 41 teams have folded meaning 900 fewer chances per week for players to play.

"We support the league's proposals but clubs and players are saying that they want more," Oxley added.

The research which prompted clubs to make their proposals would produce the same results 19 times out of 20 to within a 3% margin of error according to Survey Monkey's response rate calculator.

The findings also mirror 110,000 National Cricket Playing Survey responses since 2013 which include 3,500 from Hampshire players.
