Men’s match – 7pm start

Utilita Bowl

Hampshire Hawks take on Surrey at Utilita Bowl as the club celebrates 25 years of the ground.

Both Hawks sides got their first wins on the board on Tuesday against Essex with 23 and 30 runs respectively.

Naomi Dattani starred with an all-round performance as she made 31 and took two wickets in an over, whilst quick runs from the lower order propelled the Hawks to 160/7.

A partnership worth 71 between England all-rounder Jodi Grewcock and experienced batter Cordelia Griffith threatened to cruise Essex to victory.

But in the final five overs of the innings, the Hawks bowled to their plans and took five wickets for just 26 runs to sail home to a comfortable win.

The evening was all about Tristan Stubbs and Hilton Cartwright. The South African batter arrived in the UK from the IPL just 23 hours before the start of the match but showed no signs of exhaustion as he smacked 69 runs off just 42 balls, with five sixes, and helped rescue the Hawks from 52/3.

Joe Weatherley made 47 and put on 64 with Stubbs before Cartwright joined with four overs to go, and the overseas duo blitzed 84 runs off a combined 37 balls to see the Hawks to 200/4.

A strong start with the ball from Chris Wood removed Paul Walter and Matt Critchley, before Scott Currie delivered an exhibition on how to vary pace.

He claimed career-best figures of 4/18, with all four wickets falling to well-disguised slower balls. Spinner Andrew Neal also claimed his maiden wicket for the Hawks when he had Wiaan Mulder caught in the deep by Cartwright, and the Hawks won easily by 30 runs.

Surrey’s women completed a narrow victory over Durham on Wednesday in a low-scoring thriller.

They bowled the north east side out for just 102 in 17 overs, with England bowler Ryana Macdonald-Gay claiming remarkable figures of 6/11 from four overs.

Former Hampshire all-rounder Alice Monaghan’s unbeaten 20 saw the Three Feathers over the line with 20 balls to spare and two wickets in hand.

In Surrey men’s last match, they defeated Middlesex in the London Derby on Sunday.

A strong bowling performance saw England pacer Reece Topley claim 2/39 with young spinner Yousef Majid taking 2/25.

Tidy bowling from the Seaxes saw veteran Jason Roy removed for two off 13, Ollie Pope for a run-a-ball nine, and young gun Adam Thomas for 12.

But it was the nous of Sam Curran that saw the Browncaps over the line with 71 from 74 balls, whilst Laurie Evans made 34*.

Surrey Women

Captain: Bryony Smith

Overseas players: Laura Harris (Australia, all)

2025 finish: Winners

2025 leading run-scorer: Danni Wyatt-Hodge (377)

2025 leading wicket-taker: Ryana MacDonald-Gay (15)

Key winter moves: Laura Harris has arrived as the overseas star to fill the void left by her younger sister Grace, who was a huge hit last year. Emma Jones has left for The Blaze while Alexa Stonehouse is on loan at Warwickshire and Tash Farrant has retired. Rachel King and Emily Burke (academy) have joined the squad.

The big question: Surrey are victims of their own success in many ways with four players named in the England squad for the T20 World Cup (more than any other county) and Priyanaz Chatterji called up for Scotland. How will they compensate for the loss of three of their top six and the spin wizardry of Tilly Corteen-Coleman? Opportunity certainly knocks for others.

Wildcard watch: Alice Monaghan – all-rounder Monaghan was just finding her way into the team during last season’s tournament but appears much more of a fixture now. A more than useful seamer, Monaghan will also be needed to fill one of the voids in the top order, and she’s also shown herself to be one of the team’s top fielders.

Final thought: Surrey carried an aura of invincibility in last year’s tournament but look more vulnerable now. Laura Harris doesn’t have the all-round versatility of sister Grace, but boasted a strike-rate of 207 last year. Two players conspicuous by their absence so far this season may be crucial to hopes of repeat success. Ryana MacDonald-Gay, leading wicket-taker in 2025, has been out injured while Phoebe Franklin – a candidate for player of the tournament last season – hasn’t featured for reasons unknown.

Surrey Men

Previewed by Mark Baldwin, ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay

Captain: Sam Curran

Overseas players: Sean Abbott (Australia, all)

Finals Day appearances: Nine (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2013, 2014, 2020, 2023, 2024)

Titles: One (2003)

2025 finish: Quarter-finals

2025 leading run-scorer: Will Jacks (504)

2025 leading wicket-taker: Sam Curran (21)

Key winter moves: The return of Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott, for his fourth overseas player stint at Surrey, was announced just before the start of the season and welcomed by all at the club. Abbott is available for the whole Blast competition, in addition to Surrey’s first eight Rothesay County Championship games.

The big question: It is a source of intense irritation at the Kia Oval that Surrey have still not managed to add another short-form triumph to the winning of the inaugural Twenty20 Cup back in 2003 under Adam Hollioake’s captaincy. Despite reaching eight Finals Days since, there has been no more silverware.

Wildcard watch: With no fewer than 16 players signed up already by The Hundred franchises, the player with the best chance of becoming a 17th is possibly 18-year-old Ralphie Albert, the left-arm spinner who can bat well and represented England U19s last winter. Oh, and he’s the grandson of snooker legend Jimmy White.

Final thought: In a star-studded squad Ollie Sykes, at 21, is primed to push on again this summer after making 10 appearances in last year’s Vitality Blast and impressing with his powerful strokeplay despite limited opportunities in such a strong and deep batting line-up. Overall, last year’s quarter-final exit against a Ravi Bopara-inspired Northamptonshire has only cranked up still further Surrey’s resolve to win the Blast and get a monkey off their back.
