Match Preview: Hampshire Men v Derbyshire Falcons, Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Hampshire Men v Derbyshire Falcons

Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Tuesday 11 August (11am start)

Utilita Bowl

Hampshire Men return to Utilita Bowl as they host Derbyshire Falcons in their final group match of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

On Sunday, Hampshire completed a 51-run victory over Sussex Sharks as the Rose and Crown posted their second-highest men’s List A score in history, thanks to centuries from Ali Orr and Ben Mayes – his first hundred for Hampshire – and 86 off just 37 balls from Toby Albert, who hit six consecutive sixes in the process.

Eddie Jack’s four wickets ensured the hosts stayed behind the rate, whilst Tom Prest was impressive for his 2/75 and 19-year-old Ollie Williams picked up two wickets on his return to the side.

The victory means that Hampshire are still in the running for the quarter-finals. Beat Derbyshire, and hope that at least one of Yorkshire and Durham fall to defeat against Essex or Worcestershire Rapids, and the Rose and Crown could sneak into third spot on Net Run Rate.

Derbyshire return to Utilita Bowl, where they have not beaten Hampshire in List A cricket since 2014.

In 2024, Dom Kelly became the youngest Hampshire player to pick up a hat-trick. He dismissed Zak Chappell, Harry Moore, and Daryn Dupavillon to secure the win and take five wickets with the same ball.

Derbyshire have never beaten Hampshire at Utilita Bowl in List A cricket, in seven matches. The last time the East Midlands side defeated Hampshire in the county was at Northlands Road in September 2000.

The Falcons sit in eighth spot, with two wins from seven matches, and were defeated by Group B leaders Middlesex in their previous match.

Captain: Harry Came

2026 position: 8th (Group B)

2026 most runs: Martin Andersson (343)

2026 most wickets: Nick Potts (14)

Why they can win the competition: Although they have lost white ball whirlwind Aneurin Donald and Matthew Montgomery to The Hundred, Derbyshire still have an experienced squad to choose from with Wayne Madsen's one-day skills and nous bolstering a strong batting line-up.

Player to watch: England's Shoaib Bashir. The 22-year-old off-spinner is keen to play white-ball cricket and will bring international pedigree to the bowling unit. On dry pitches, his ability to get bounce from a high action makes him a potential match-winner.

Young gun: Rory Haydon made his mark in last year's competition and the right-arm pace bowler has made impressive progress this season in red-ball cricket. He challenges the batters with his ability to combine a consistent line with late movement.

Final thought: After an underwhelming Vitality T20 Blast campaign, Derbyshire will be out to show they can be contenders in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup format. But to turn promise into prosperity, they have to perform better in pressure moments to get over the line.
