Middlesex v Hampshire Hawks

Vitality Blast

Sunday 31 May

2:30pm start

Merchant Taylors’ School, Northwood

Hampshire Hawks Men visit Merchant Taylors’ School as they take on Middlesex in the Vitality Blast.

The Hawks are two wins from three after Friday’s victory against Surrey at Utilita Bowl.

17-year-old fast bowler Manny Lumsden claimed his maiden Blast wicket when he had Ollie Pope caught behind and went on to finish with 2/29 when he had Sam Curran brilliantly caught in the deep by Hilton Cartwright.

Scott Currie was excellent again with the ball for his 2/24 whilst James Fuller also claimed two wickets.

Toby Albert got the innings off to a flyer with his 30 from 15, but Liam Dawson was the standout for his unbeaten 76 from 44 balls, with four 4s and four 6s – his seventh T20 fifty and first for three years.

Tristan Stubbs made 31 as he and Dawson put on 83 for the fifth wicket before Hilton Cartwright finished off the game magnificently by sending the first ball of the final over into the stands.

Middlesex take on Sussex Sharks at Hove this evening, with play starting at 7pm.

Their previous fixture was last Sunday as they hosted Surrey at Lord’s in the London Derby, where they were undone by the Three Feathers.

All-rounder Luke Hollman top scored with an unbeaten 35 whilst South African overseas Eathan Bosch made a quick 31 to help the Seaxes to a below-par 143/8.

Left arm quick Noah Cornwell had Jason Roy tied up before eventually bowling him for two off 13 balls, whilst the experienced Tom Helm picked up 2/24 but Sam Curran’s unbeaten 71 and Laurie Evans’ 34 saw the south London side to victory.

Captain: Leus du Plooy

Overseas players: Eathan Bosch (all)

Finals Day appearances: One (2008)

Titles: One (2008)

2025 finish: 8th in South Group

2025 leading run-scorer: Stephen Eskinazi (420)

2025 leading wicket-taker: Tom Helm (20)

Key winter moves: Peter Fulton has arrived from New Zealand as head coach, but stellar batter Kane Williamson won’t be returning for a second stint and leading run-scorer from 2025, former skipper Stephen Eskinazi has left for Leicestershire. England U19 World Cup final century maker Caleb Falconer has been added to the squad and seems sure to make his Blast debut.

The big question: Can Peter Fulton succeed where others have fallen short and revive the white-ball fortunes of a Middlesex team who have reached only two T20 quarter-finals since Toby Radford led them to the trophy in 2008? Two-metre Pete has form, leading previous team Canterbury to glory twice in New-Zealand’s premier white-ball competition, the Ford Trophy, though that is a 50-over format.

Wildcard watch: Caleb Falconer – the 19-year-old right-hander announced himself to the cricketing world with that century at the U19 World Cup final in Zimbabwe, a knock which earnt him a Hundred contract with Southern Brave later this summer. He recently made his first-class debut and looks sure to play a part for a team which needs a creative spark in the shorter format.

Final thought: Middlesex have an exciting crop of youngsters like Falconer, Sebastian Morgan, Naavya Sharma and others, some of whom took their first steps in the Blast last season. The challenge will be, with no sign of a marquee batter on the horizon, last year’s leading scorer Eskinazi having left, and wicket-keeper/batter Joe Cracknell set to miss the start of the competition with a broken finger, whether Middlesex set and chase down targets in a format where the power hitters are king.
