Hampshire begin their men’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup on the road to Scarborough where they will face their opponents from last year’s semi-final, Yorkshire.
Nick Gubbins has led the side to the knockout stages of the competition in each of the previous four years and finished runners-up twice in 2023 and 2025 – both games being narrow defeats in the final over.
The squad is a highly experienced one, especially with the bat. Gubbins himself was the tournament’s leading run-scorer last season when he amassed over 700 runs at an average of 88.
On the bowling front, expect a barrage of young players, with the likes of former England U19s all-rounder Dom Kelly. He became the most youthful Hampshire player to claim a hat-trick when he dismissed Zak Chappell, Harry Moore, and Daryl Dupavillon on his way to a five-wicket haul against Derbyshire in 2024.
23-year-old Harry Petrie returns to Hampshire whilst Academy pacer Oli Williams has also signed a short-term deal to add to the club’s already impressive list of young fast bowlers.
For Yorkshire, the experienced Ben Coad and Jack White will be the leaders of their bowling attack along with up-and-coming all-rounder George Hill.
Adam Lyth will be a rock at the top of the order, and he scored a century against Hampshire in the County Championship at the start of the year, whilst exciting young opener Finlay Bean and the experienced Big Bash-winning Australian Sam Whiteman are another two players to keep your eye on.

Why they can win the competition: They bossed Group B last year and lost only two games in the competition, including the semi-final against Hampshire at Scarborough. They’ve been excellent in the Vitality T20 Blast as well this term, really building up that limited overs rhythm.
Player to watch: Will Luxton is a young batter who has shown a significant amount of promise across all formats and will be one of Yorkshire’s key batters in this competition. If he gets going, it will be fun to watch.
Young gun: Academy fast bowler Bradley Sylvester is somewhat of a wildcard. Has just been on England Under 19s duty against South Africa and probably won’t play every game. But the 19-year-old is expected to make his senior debut at some point.
Final thought: The ‘why they can win the competition’ section provides the glass half full view. The glass half empty view is that they have lost both last season’s leading run-scorer and leading wicket-taker, Imam-ul-Haq and Matt Milnes. Could be a problem.
