Nathan Lyon: Key Moments

Take a look at five key career highlights in the career so far of Hampshire's latest overseas signing, Nathan Lyon

Following this week's announcement that Nathan Lyon will join Hampshire as overseas player for 2020, we look back at some of the off-spinner's key moments for Australia in a career which has seen him become the nation's third highest wicket-taker.

A Test Debut To Remember

After receiving his first call-up to the Australian national side in 2011, Lyon made his Test debut against Sri Lanka in Galle on 31st August. It was a dream start for the off-spinner too as he claimed his first Test wicket off his very first delivery – just the third Australian to do so and first since 1894 – removing Kumar Sangakkara, before going on to finish with figures of 5-34 and becoming the 131st player to take a five-wicket haul on debut.

100 Up!

It was a Boxing Day Test to remember for Lyon in 2013 as he claimed his 100th Test wicket and his first five-wicket haul in Australia, taking 5-50 in just 17 overs during his side’s fourth Ashes Test against England. That contribution saw the off-spinner become the fourth youngest Australian bowler to 100 wickets, with only Shane Warne, Craig McDermott and Graham McKenzie reaching the milestone earlier, as the hosts claimed a comfortable eight-wicket win in what would be a series whitewash, Lyon’s first Ashes series victory.

12 of the Best

A first man-of-the-match performance one year later against India in December 2014 proved to be a turning point for Lyon as he claimed 12 wickets in the match, his best figures at the time. That haul helped guide his side to victory against a strong visiting side in the opening match of the Border-Gavaskar series at the Adelaide Oval and was nominated as one of the best Test bowling performances of the year.

A Landmark 2017

2017 was a prolific year for Lyon with a number of outstanding personal achievements – including finishing as the highest Test wicket-taker in the calendar year – which contributed to team success.

He claimed a career-best during Australia’s tour to Bangladesh in September, picking up superb figures of 13-154 in the series’ second Test, the best haul ever recorded in Asia by an Australian bowler. Having also picked up nine scalps in the opening fixture, those 22 wickets were the most ever taken in a two-match series by an Australian bowler. Lyon also become the second Australian spinner after Shane Warne to take 250 Test wickets that year, whilst a magnificent 8-50 during his side’s tour of India saw him finish with the best figures ever recorded in India by a visiting bowler.

The Ashes Retained

Having been awarded Australia’s Men’s Test Player of the Year to begin 2019, Lyon capped another strong showing for the national side this year. Lyon was an integral part of the Test squad which went on to retain the Ashes for the first time in 18 years, with his nine wickets in the first Test at Edgbaston helping Australia win at the venue for the first time in 19 years and proving to be a catalyst for series success.
