Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy Rewind: Dean Decimates Sunrisers’ Top Order

Charlie Dean took 3-31 along with a late run out to help the Vipers to a narrow 11-run victory at The Ageas Bowl

With the 2022 season now firmly in the rear-view mirror, we're taking a look back at some of the performances that caught the eye throughout Southern Vipers' Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy campaign.

After the Vipers’ innings was rescued by Chloe Hill and Paige Scholfield, it was down to the home side’s bowlers to defend 233 at The Ageas Bowl.

The Sunrisers got off to a steady start before Charlie Dean was brought into the attack where she struck with just her second ball.

England Women U19’s captain Grace Scrivens shaped up to cut but could only succeed in dragging the ball onto her own stumps, and the Vipers had an early breakthrough.

After a spell of just four overs, Dean was taken off before returning in the 24th over as batters Naomi Dattani and Cordelia Griffith were proving difficult to dismiss.

Once again, off spinner Dean struck in her first over back, as Dattani missed a sweep and the ball clattered into her off stump.

A handful of overs later, and Dean had her third.

Fellow spinner Mady Villiers lined up a reverse sweep but once again, Dean’s accuracy was just too good, as the off bail fell to the ground.

Wickets began to fall with some regularity for the Vipers, but thanks to a late onslaught from Jo Gardner, the game was never up.

With 16 runs needed off the last over for the Sunrisers, it was all but in the bag for the Vipers, and with three balls to go, Gardner chipped the ball down to Dean at long on who threw the ball back in to skipper Adams and Kelly Castle was caught short of her ground, and the Vipers went on to win by just 11 runs.
