Warwickshire tasted deep frustration after piling up 354 against Hampshire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup women’s competition, only for rain to arrive during the interval and wash out the game.
Half-centuries from all the top five powered Warwickshire to 354 for seven, their highest 50-over score, after they were put in by visiting captain Georgia Adams at Edgbaston.
Davina Perrin struck 81 from 76 balls, Charis Pavely 63 not out (38), Katie George 56 (51), Meg Austin 51 (43) and Amu Surenkumar (51, 63).
Hampshire were certainly not out of the game - having pulled off a thrilling run-chase against Essex at Southampton on Saturday, they would have fancied the testing target on a good pitch.
But it was tough on Warwickshire that they were denied a chance to capitalise upon a textbook batting performance.
The visitors chose to bowl but had to wait a long time for their first breakthrough as Perrin and Surenkumar added 147 in 22 overs.
Perrin lifted Bex Tyson for successive sixes over mid-wicket to hurry the Bears to 50 in the 11th over and went on to reach her half-century from 55 balls, Surenkumar following to hers in 61.
The openers fell in successive overs when Surenkumar skied Tyson to mid-wicket and, eight balls later, Perrin pulled Daisy Gibb to deep mid-wicket.
Warwickshire’s progress remained serene, though, as third-wicket pair Austin and George added a fluent 101 in 14 overs.
Austin added another half-century to the one she notched against Hampshire at Edgbaston in last season’s Blast before driving Amanda-Jade Wellington low to point.
George posted a 46-ball fifty in the next over before leading-edging a return catch to Megan Sturge, but Pavely provided perfect late impetus.
Successive fours scooped over the wicketkeeper’s head off Naomi Dattani took her to a 28-ball half-century which ensured Hampshire had a very tall total to chase.
Sadly, rain arrived during the interval and intensified after it, denying the spectators a fascinating contest and Alexa Stonehouse, making her Warwickshire debut on loan from Surrey, the chance to get ball in hand.
