Robin Smith: The Judge Who Stood Tall In The Ashes
A masterful batter whose courage defined Ashes series and cemented his place in Hampshire & England history.
After a rained-off fixture and a nail-biting loss to begin the 2019 Vitality Blast campaign, Hampshire will be looking to secure their first win of the competition when they take on Sussex at Hove on Wednesday.
Hampshire Squad:
An unchanged 14-man squad has been named for Wednesday’s away contest.
James Vince’s side will be looking to get the upper-hand over Sussex Sharks in the ‘el clasicoast’ stakes following last Friday’s abandoned first-leg at the The Ageas Bowl. The skipper will no doubt be crucial to Hampshire’s chances after marking his return to the set-up with an impressive half-century in Sunday’s belated curtain-raiser against Kent Spitfires.
Kyle Abbott and Liam Dawson also made valuable contributions on Sunday, finishing with 3-22 and 2-25 from their allotted overs respectively, and both will be looking for further success with the ball at Hove.
The Opposition:
Following a fantastic 2018 Vitality Blast competition which saw them reach their second ever T20 final, Sussex Sharks will be looking to replicate that success and go one step further this year.
Luke Wright’s side are full of variety, particularly with the ball, with overseas spin star Rashid Khan headlining the attack alongside fellow spinners Danny Briggs and Will Beer, as well as left-arm seamers Tymal Mills and Reece Topley.
Laurie Evans, Phil Salt, Ben Brown and David Wiese will all be likely threats with the bat in a strong top-order, all of which featured in last summer’s successful T20 effort.
