Hampshire Men are in Metro Bank One-Day Cup action for a second time in four days at Utilita Bowl as the Rose and Crown host the daffodil of Glamorgan on Wednesday 5 August.

Nick Gubbins’ side were outplayed by a Durham side containing Ben Stokes, but the former England men’s Test captain had very little to do on the field in the end as an unbeaten century from Emilio Gay made Hampshire’s route to the knockouts more difficult.

Toby Albert shone on his return to the team with 89 whilst Jake Lehmann notched up his maiden fifty of the competition, but a collapse saw Hampshire bowled out for 246 on the final ball of their 50 overs, with Andrew Neal continuing his good form by making 30 off 25 balls.

But a thunderous start with the bat by the experienced Graham Clark, who made 68 off 58 balls) settled whatever nerves the visitors had, as Felix Organ picked up the only wicket when he pinned the opener lbw. Wicket keeper Ollie Robinson made a fluid 64* from 65 balls as Gay completed his century and scored the winning runs off the same delivery.

Glamorgan were one of the two sides not in action on Sunday, and were defeated in the previous match against Derbyshire Falcons at Repton School.

All-rounder Dan Douthwaite picked up 3/66, but the Falcons reached 315/5 thanks to a quickfire 108* off 82 balls from Brooke Guest and 84 from Aussie Caleb Jewel.

Zain-ul-Hassan, who scored his maiden century against Hampshire earlier in the Championship season, made 61 at the top of the order, with keeper Alex Horton scoring 81, but Glamorgan were bowled out 44 runs shy of Derbyshire’s innings as they sit second from bottom of Group B.

These two sides faced off in last year’s season opener at Neath, where Nick Gubbins recorded a career-best 144* and teenagers Manny Lumsden and Ben Mayes shone on their professional debuts.

Hampshire

Hampshire have named a 17-player squad for their men’s Metro Bank One-Day Cup match against Glamorgan.

Fast bowling duo Manny Lumsden and Eddie Jack return from The Hundred having not yet featured for Southern Brave and MI London respectively.

Following a strong start to the competition, with one century and two fifties, Tom Prest is only 43 runs away from 1,500 career List A runs.

Why they can win the competition:  This is a competition that has brought success for Glamorgan, with two titles in the past five years. With five players missing, they will be hindered by The Hundred more than ever before, but their youthful talents might cause a few upsets.

Player to watch: Andy Gorvin. Despite just 79 career matches, at 29 years of age Gorvin will be one of the most experienced players in the side. His white-ball, box-of-tricks skillset provides that unpredictable but reliable bowler you want in your side.

Young gun: Romano Franco. Glamorgan will likely have at least six under-23s playing, but Franco is the most likely to stand out. With Mason Crane and Ben Kellaway absent, the 19-year-old slow-left-armer already has a year of this tournament under his belt.

Final thought: Hopes might not be too high for this year’s edition with Glamorgan currently coach-less, but what it will bring is a chance to see who announces themselves next, as Asa Tribe and Tom Norton did last year.
