Match Preview: Surrey v Hampshire Women, Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Surrey v Hampshire Women

Metro Bank One-Day Cup

Wednesday 19 August (10:30am start)

Woodbridge Road, Guildford

Hampshire Women re-assemble for the return of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup as Georgia Adams’ side head up the A3 to Guildford to face Surrey.

The Rose and Crown currently sit comfortably in second place, four points behind The Blaze at the top and 13 points ahead of Durham in third, with eight wins from their 11 matches.

Last time out in this competition, the searing heat took centre stage as the players took to the field in near-40-degree heat.

Rhianna Southby made a career-best 90 and was helped by Abi Norgrove’s 64 and Amanda-Jade Wellington’s 42; Hampshire reached 265.

Georgia Adams shone with the ball as she claimed 3/30 as the Bears were bowled out for 194.

Surrey fell to defeat at the hands of Durham in their last outing back in June.

The Three Feathers were bowled out for 179 inside 40 overs, and Durham chased the target down with six wickets in hand.

The last time the two sides met was at the start of the season, when Hampshire were victorious in a tight game.

Abi Norgrove’s unbeaten run-a-ball 81 was the standout for the hosts, with Maia Bouchier also making a half-century, as Hampshire posted 272/5.

A strong start with the ball saw Surrey struggle at 81/6, but Danni Wyatt-Hodge smashed a scintillating 119 from 86 balls to almost see her side to victory.

Hampshire

Hampshire have named a 14-player squad for their home match against Surrey at Guildford.

Scotland keeper-batter Pippa Sproul is included in the squad along with 17-year-old Eliza Bristowe who scored a half-century for the Academy in their ongoing three-day game against Durham.

England quartet Lauren Bell, Maia Bouchier, Freya Kemp, and Linsey Smith are all unavailable.

Surrey

Previewed by Jon Batham, ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay.

Captain: Kira Chathli

Head coach: Johann Myburgh

2026 standings: 4th (22 points, 5 wins, 5 defeats)

2026 highest run-scorer: Danni Wyatt-Hodge (378)

2026 highest wicket-taker: Maitlan Brown (17)

Player movement: Former South Africa captain Sune Luus replaces Australian all-rounder Maitlan Brown, who was with the Three Feathers for the first block of fixtures. Luus will be available for the remainder of the season and is set to debut against Hampshire at Guildford on 19th August. Two other additions to the squad are Rachel King and Emily Burke. Wicketkeeper-batter King signed a rookie contract in October after spending much of last year in Surrey’s Vitality Blast squads, while Burke is promoted from the academy. Big-hitting seamer Emma Jones has permanently headed north to The Blaze while another quick, Alexa Stonehouse, has gone on a season-long loan to Warwickshire.

The big question: Surrey were all-but unstoppable in the Vitality Blast last season but must uncover the secret of how to transfer that dominance to the longer white-ball format. There were several instances in 2025 of the bowling attack coming up short defending scores of around 300, most notably in the semi-final against Hampshire where their total of 287 was overhauled with almost three overs to spare.

Player to watch: Tilly Corteen-Coleman. Given the teenager was sold at the recent Hundred auction for £105,000, it seems spurious to flag her as one to watch. However, much of her success so far has come in T20 whereas in the 2025 One Day Cup she took only two wickets. Only 18, the slow left-armer is still learning her craft, and if she makes a leap forward in this format, Surrey may do too.

Final thought: Alice Capsey, Sophia Dunkley, Ryana MacDonald-Gay and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are centrally contracted to England, and Stonehouse has been loaned out, so there are question marks over availability in a World Cup year. Much may rest on the shoulders of last season’s leading run-scorer Alice Davidson-Richards and spinners Corteen-Coleman and Dani Gregory if Chathli is to enjoy success in her first season as skipper.
