Sonny Baker Set For England Test Debut

Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker is set to realise a lifelong dream after being named in England’s XI for the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval.

The 23-year-old will receive his maiden Test cap on Wednesday, becoming the latest Hampshire player to play the ultimate format, marking an immensely proud moment for the Club.

Baker’s inclusion comes after Ollie Robinson was ruled out through injury, with England confirming the Hampshire quick will make his long-awaited debut alongside fellow debutant Jordan Cox.

For those who have followed Baker’s journey, the call-up is a reward for years of perseverance, hard work and resilience.

With genuine pace and the ability to move the ball through the air, Baker has long been regarded as one of the most exciting fast-bowling prospects in English cricket. However, his route to the Test arena has not been straightforward, with injuries threatening to halt his progress on more than one occasion.

The right-armer continued to battle his way back, earning opportunities with England Lions and making his international debut in white-ball cricket last year. While his first taste of international cricket proved challenging, Baker has responded impressively, claiming 22 wickets in six County Championship matches for Hampshire this season, regularly clocking around 90mph.

England Head Coach Brendon McCullum has spoken glowingly about the Hampshire seamer ahead of the match, highlighting his pace, skill and immense passion for the game.

I genuinely believe that if Sonny’s able to get some early success, the crowd’s going to get behind him. I think the country is going to be behind him because he plays the game a little bit like Mark Wood. He’s got good air-speed, he swings the ball, he’s got great skills. But he charges in and he’s got wild celebrations, and you can just see that cricket is what he wants to do.

Baker’s debut comes as part of a new-look England side for the second Test, with Jofra Archer, Matt Fisher and Jordan Cox also included in the XI.

Sonny Baker’s journey is a testament to determination and belief.

On Wednesday at The Oval, another chapter begins.

Everyone at Hampshire Cricket wishes Sonny the very best on his Test debut.
