Dave Allen: 20 Years Of Gloucestershire At The Ageas Bowl

Club historian Dave Allen has taken a look back at Gloucestershire's previous visits to The Ageas Bowl

Our first home match with Gloucestershire in 2010 saw us post 205-5, one of 11 occasions when we have passed 200 in a T20 innings. James Vince (77) and Neil McKenzie (55) added 110 for the fourth wicket and while Gloucestershire reached 164-4, they lost the remaining wickets for just 13 runs (Dent 63) – our left-armers Chris Wood took 3-27 and Danny Briggs 3-31 both passing their previous best figures. In the following year Gloucestershire, including Muralitharan (4-15) restricted us to 139-7 (Adams 47) before rain meant a revised target for Gloucestershire of 124 in 17 overs but Shahid Afridi with 5-20 bowled them out for 107 – it was one of just six ‘five-fors’ (or better) in Hampshire’s T20 history and our best against Gloucestershire.

Gloucestershire made their highest total against us on our ground in 2016 but even 178-8 with 50 from our ‘old boy’ Benny Howell could not take them to victory as Will Smith’s 3-26 left them two short of our total, which was built on 69* from Jimmy Adams including a partnership of 68 with Glenn Maxwell. In 2016 they visited us again, the teams were named, we won the toss and that was it – the rain came and the game never started. For our overseas West Indian Darren Sammy it was a very un-Caribbean way to end his English T20 career.

2018 was a better day; Gloucestershire posted 144 (Klinger 43) with Chris Wood taking 4-16 in his four overs and we chased that down with 19 balls and six wickets to spare, with 48* from Vince and 42 from Rilee Rossouw. The 2020 match was cancelled with the Covid-rearranged fixture list while in 2021 we met them at home having won just one of our first nine matches and our victory by 10 runs got us going; we won five in-a-row from there which took us to the quarter-final thrills of Trent Bridge. In the game against Gloucestershire Tom Prest’s 59* and Fuller’s 38 took us to 176-6 and while Phillips with 57 and Dent 42 gave them hope when Phillips went they still needed 43 from 21 balls. It was too many (Wood 2-31).
