Match Preview: Surrey v Hampshire Hawks, Vitality Blast

The Hawks have named a 13-player squad for their trip up the M3 to the Kia Oval

Surrey v Hampshire Hawks

Vitality Blast (South Group)

Thursday 18th July (6:30pm start)

Kia Oval

Hampshire Hawks head into their penultimate match of the Vitality Blast short of qualification.

The Hawks suffered a nine-wicket defeat at the hands of last year’s champions, Somerset, on Sunday at Utilita Bowl, despite a fluent half-century from Tom Prest.

The defeat saw the 2022 winners knocked out with two games to play, as they currently sit in sixth place and an unattainable six points of reaching the quarter-final places.

Surrey sit top of the group, with eight wins from 12 matches, and have only been beaten once at home this season in the competition, where Sussex Sharks posted a mammoth 213-7 as the brown caps fell 36 runs short.

In their last match, they defeated Essex by 13 runs in a thrilling contest at Chelmsford.

Captain: Chris Jordan

Hoping to add to their solitary T20 trophy from the inaugural season in 2003, Surrey are well-placed to end their 21-year drought in the shortest format.

The south London side have lost just two games, with one tie and one abandonment, to leave them sitting pretty with 18 points at the top of the table.

However, both their leading wicket taker and run scorer are both unavailable, with Sean Abbott back in Australia, and Jamie Smith with the England men’s Test squad.

Firepower is still ever-present in the Surrey batting lineup with Will Jacks back from the World Cup alongside Laurie Evans, with the wiley Curran brothers, Jamie Overton, and Chris Jordan all more than capable of clearing the ropes.

Tom Curran has 14 wickets to his name, the second most for Surrey after Abbott, but the next best in Gus Atkinson, Dan Lawrence, and Spencer Johnson are no longer available. The replacements of Chris Jordan, Sam Curran, and Dan Worrall are still pretty handy though.
