Smith, who passed away in December at the age of 62, was one of the most accomplished and respected batters of his generation, representing both Hampshire and England with distinction across a career spanning more than two decades.
Affectionately known as ‘The Judge’, Smith made 62 Test appearances for England, scoring more than 4,000 runs, and captained Hampshire between 1998 and 2002. He represented the Club from 1982 to 2003 and remains one of its most iconic figures.
Renowned for his courage against the world’s fastest bowlers and his trademark stroke play, Smith earned widespread admiration throughout the game. Beyond his achievements on the field, he was known for his character, warmth, and the lasting impression he made on teammates, supporters, and the wider cricketing community.

The memorial service at Winchester Cathedral will provide a moment for family, friends, former teammates, and supporters to come together to honour Smith’s life and reflect on his contribution to the game.
The memorial is an open event to all to attend. Those wishing to attend are invited to register their interest in advance, with further details to be shared following registration.
A live stream of the service will also be available, ensuring that those unable to attend in person can still pay their respects and still be part of the occasion.
Smith’s legacy endures through his achievements, his influence on those around him, and his place in the history of both Hampshire Cricket and English cricket.
