Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup: Hampshire Hawks 201/3 beat Glamorgan 104/9 by 97 runs

Francesca Sweet’s blistering unbeaten 77 helped Hampshire Hawks claim a convincing 97-run victory over Glamorgan in the Vitality T20 Women’s County Cup at Newport after the Hawks posted an imposing 201/3.

Maia Bouchier’s superb 63 and Abi Norgrove’s composed 47 provided the platform for the Hawks, before an incisive bowling display restricted Glamorgan to 104/9.

Bex Tyson led the attack with 3/25, while Georgia Adams returned 2/9 and Poppy Tulloch picked up two late wickets to complete a dominant all-round performance.

Hampshire made an immediate statement after winning the toss and electing to bat, with the top order setting the tone on a good surface in Newport.

Georgia Adams fell early for 11, but it was Maia Bouchier who gave the Hawks control, playing with fluency and authority in a sparkling 63 from 42 deliveries.

Her innings included 10 fours and a six and ensured Hampshire maintained momentum through the opening exchanges.

The England batter, who was left out of the squad for the ongoing T20 World Cup, has now reached fifty on seven occasions this summer, and she has surpassed three figures on two over those.

She found regular boundaries and led Hampshire to 95/2 before eventually being bowled in the 11th over, by which point the visitors had already laid the foundations for a substantial total.

From there, Abi Norgrove and Francesca Sweet combined impressively to push Hampshire into a commanding position.

Norgrove’s 47 from 34 balls was a highly valuable contribution through the middle overs, balancing intelligent rotation with timely boundary-scoring to keep Glamorgan under pressure.

Sweet then provided the decisive late acceleration, producing a superb 77* from just 35 balls, striking nine fours and two sixes at a remarkable strike rate of 220. Her innings brought real impetus to the closing stages as Hampshire surged towards, and beyond, the 200 mark.

The 22-year-old has made her mark having joined Hampshire from Tier 2 Leicestershire over the winter. She recorded her first fifty against Yorkshire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup and now has three scores of 50+ to her name, with two coming in her previous two innings.

Norgrove was run out for 47 off the penultimate ball of the innings, but the Hawks had already taken firm control, eventually closing on 201/3 from their 20 overs.

Glamorgan’s bowlers found it difficult to stem the flow once Hampshire’s middle order settled, with only Katy Cobb and Sara Phillips claiming wickets.

Defending a formidable target, Hampshire were equally impressive with the ball. Tyson made the early breakthrough by removing the Welsh outfit’s leading run-scorer, Lauren Parfitt, for five and Glamorgan’s reply quickly slipped into trouble as Adams delivered an outstanding spell of control and accuracy.

She had Daisy Jeanes and Bethan Gammon both bowled in the same over – a wicket maiden – and later ran out former Hampshire player Gemma Porter off her own bowling.

Fellow spinner Tyson continued to press home the Hawks’ advantage, striking again to dismiss Bea Ellis and ex-Hampshire player Daisy Mullan as Glamorgan slumped to 26/5 inside five overs.

From that point, the chase was always going to be a difficult task, and the Hawks maintained their discipline superbly.

Eve Jackson and Gemma Porter began to rebuild with a partnership of 38, but not with the pace Glamorgan required.

Hannah Hardwick had Jackson caught by Sweet for 14, before Tulloch bowled Jazz Westley and Sara Phillips in the 15th over to further derail the innings.

Gemma Porter top scored for Glamorgan with 23, while Paige Walker and Cobb added late runs in an unbroken stand at the end of the innings, but the result was never in doubt.

Glamorgan closed on 104/9, leaving the Hawks as emphatic winners by 97 runs and through to the quarter-finals which take place on Sunday 23rd August.
