Temporomandibular Joint

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ)

Specialist treatment for jaw pain, dysfunction, and facial discomfort

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) plays a vital role in everyday activities such as chewing, speaking, and yawning. When this joint becomes painful or dysfunctional, it can lead to a range of symptoms that affect not just the jaw, but also the head, neck, and even shoulders. Our TMJ Specialist Physiotherapists are experienced in diagnosing and treating disorders of the jaw to help you manage pain, improve function, and restore comfort.

We take a holistic and individualised approach to treating TMJ-related conditions, aiming to relieve symptoms and address the underlying causes.

Conditions We Treat

Our team regularly assesses and manages a wide variety of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), including:

  • Jaw and facial pain
  • Nerve pain (e.g. trigeminal neuralgia)
  • Clicking, locking, or restricted jaw movement
  • Bite alignment issues contributing to joint or muscle stress
  • Muscle tightness, pain, or weakness in the jaw and neck
  • Associated headaches and neck pain

Our Approach

Treatment begins with a detailed assessment of jaw movement, joint mechanics, and surrounding muscle function. We then develop a tailored treatment plan which may include:

  • Manual therapy for the jaw and surrounding areas
  • Soft tissue release and myofascial techniques
  • Postural correction and education
  • Relaxation and breathing techniques to reduce jaw tension
  • Exercises to improve jaw strength, coordination, and alignment
  • Collaboration with dentists or other specialists if needed

Whether you're experiencing pain when chewing, difficulty opening your mouth, or persistent jaw discomfort, our TMJ specialists are here to help restore function and reduce discomfort with gentle, expert care.
